Development Communication

The Department of Development Communication at TIUC is committed to training communication professionals who can use media and strategic communication to drive social change, influence policy, and empower communities. Our programme equips students with the knowledge and tools to design, implement, and evaluate communication initiatives that promote development in areas such as health, education, governance, agriculture, and the environment.

The Department of Development Communication focuses on how communication strategies can support social transformation, civic participation, and policy influence. Students gain skills in designing communication interventions for development projects, NGOs, government agencies, and international organizations.

  • Principles of Development Communication

  • Communication for Health, Agriculture, and Education

  • Community Mobilization and Grassroots Campaigns

  • Policy Advocacy and Public Affairs Communication

  • Media for Social Change

  • Participatory Communication Strategies

  • Monitoring & Evaluation of Development Campaigns

  • ICTs and Digital Tools for Development

The department emphasizes practical, project-based learning, with opportunities for fieldwork, internships, and collaborations with NGOs, government agencies, and development partners.

Undergraduate Admission

  • Five (5) O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics, plus three other relevant subjects (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB), obtained in not more than two sittings.

  • A satisfactory UTME score in subjects relevant to communication and social sciences.

  • Direct Entry candidates must hold two A-Level passes, OND, NCE, or equivalent qualifications acceptable to TIUC.

  • Awaiting result candidates are welcome to apply, with conditional admission until results are verified.

Postgraduate Admission

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or related disciplines with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.

  • Submission of official transcripts and references.

  • For M.Sc.: Applicants with backgrounds in other fields may be considered if they have relevant work/volunteer experience in development communication.

  • For Ph.D.: A Master’s degree with at least 3.5/5.0 CGPA in development communication, communication studies, or related fields, plus a research proposal.

Graduates of the Department of Development Communication can build careers in:

  • Development Agencies (local and international NGOs)

  • Government Ministries and Policy Units

  • Public Health Communication & Advocacy

  • Agricultural and Rural Development Projects

  • Environmental and Climate Change Campaigns

  • International Organizations (UN, AU, ECOWAS, etc.)

  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability Units

  • Research, Teaching, and Consultancy in Development Communication

TIUC graduates from this department will be well-positioned to serve as change agents, community mobilizers, and communication strategists, addressing Africa’s most pressing development challenges.
